It's the 1990s, and Mark has two problems. His girlfriend Shannon Van de Witt has just dumped him — publicly — for getting in the way of her shot at stardom. And his grunge garage band is, by any fair assessment, going nowhere.

So Mark does what any heartbroken seventeen-year-old with a guitar and a grudge would do: he reinvents the band overnight as a boy band and enters the State Talent Show, the same competition Shannon is about to win with her girl group, the Candy Girls.

There is a catch. None of them can dance. Enter Ella, the strong-willed new girl who agrees to choreograph them, and who turns out to be far more interesting than the ex Mark is trying to win back. Then a rumour starts about the judge — record producer Simon Austin, grudgingly serving out community service — and a small lie Mark tells to keep the band together threatens to cost him the only thing he actually cares about.

Expect frosted tips, butterfly clips, choreography rehearsed to within an inch of its life, and an ending nobody in the heats saw coming — because it turns out there's more to life than stardom.
